Holstein drilling module being skidded onto the barge
Project Summary
In May of 2004, the 4,000 t
drilling module for the BP Holstein Spar was successfully loaded
out onto the 400 x 100 ft Crowley cargo barge Atka. The module
was constructed by AMFELS in Brownsville, TX, and upon completion, it
was skidded onto the barge, using hydraulic push/pull units. To
facilitate break-out, additional push jacks were placed behind the skid
shoes. During the skidding operation, the barge was continuously
ballasted to compensate for the weight coming onboard, as well as for
the changes in tide. After loading, the module was seafastened for the
tow to its offshore installation site.
Scope
of Work
The project scope
included:
-
Review and comment on the
proposed load-out procedures;
-
Review and verify the ballast
procedures;
-
Facilitate a
HAZOP/HAZID session for the load-out;
-
Provide on-site assistance
during the actual load-out operation.
